ALMOST THE HOLIDAYS

School will end on Thursday the 20th December. We will have a short
last day  and then students will head down in school buses to the final
prize giving. The whole community is invited to the hall to listen to
our school singing and watching some students receive certificates.
All of the year eights leave to high school after the assembly and one
of them will receive a Wayne Biggs memorial trophy and another year
eight will receive a sport award. All year Eight students will also
receive a free Ngatimoti school pen with their name engraved on it.
All Enviro leaders and Student Council members are guaranteed to
get a certificate.

 Passion PROJECT

For the past two weeks people in the Indigo Room

Have been doing their Passion Project, people like Denys and Arjay did their passion project on baking a cake for the whole class… Madi did dance, Chris and Jack did Fortnite dances and Nikau and Kaleb did t-kicks and it’s been really fun and delicious and everybody likes it.

Calling Bodie in Antarctica

On Friday last week we called Ara's uncle, Bodie in Antarctica. Everyone in our class was allowed to ask one question if they wanted to. Bodie works at Mc Murdo station and goes there about every six months to work.

Antarctica has the coldest temperature ever recorded.

Indigo room is also doing a LEARNZ  journey on Antarctica.

CAMP MARAHAU

On Monday the 12th of November, Indigo went on their camp to Marahau. 

On the first day, we had Richard De Hamel in to teach us about fish, flax, string and fire. The first group went to do kayaking during this for our first rotation. Later in the afternoon, the rest of us dod GPS tracking, ANZAC biscuit baking and drift wood sculptures.

On the second day half the class did Abseiling, while the other half did crab study. In side the tower, there were vertical mazes and they were really fun. We then did our second activitie rotation. 

On the third day we walked to Anchorage, we then got water taxies back. One of the boats on the way back did sharp twisty things when the boat went on its side and it was really fun. When we got back we rested, went in the tower and did two rotations.

On the last day of camp, the second half of the class did Abseiling and the first half did crab study. We did our last rotation and then we got packed up and ready to leave. We were all VERY tired.

On the 5th of November, NZ celebrated Parihaka. On Friday last week, Indigo Room did some art. The art was of Mt. Taranaki and some feathers printed on with special ink. The art looked a little like this, just not with the writing.

After we had finished we stood up in front of Room 3, Room 1 and Room 2 they looked so cool and we are going to carry on learning about Parihaka and hopefully we will get to do some more art to do.

On Friday the 9th of November yr 6 from indigo room are going to MOTEC. The year 7&8 go there every Monday at MOTECwe can learn all types of things like baking, sewing, wood work and loads more, it is going to be super fun. Lots of the time people bring back baking and crafts that they made. The year 7&8's have so much fun there.

SHAKE OUT BY NIKAU AND JACK

This week on the Thursday the 18th of October it was the shake out.

The shake out is where schools or families practice what to do in the event of a big earthquake.

our school participated in the shake out drill.

Ngatimoti school festival on sunday we held  
the ngatimoti festival the activities were horse riding,bumper cars,sponge through and lots more.

there  was a lot of lollies,drinks and other kinds of food it was
very yummy and cheap.

There was also a animal tent there was a really cut goat called
marshmallow and there was a lot of guinea pigs,sheep and
goats and there was one horse.

  Mrs Milnes Brought In Her Dogs!

On Tuesday the 25th of September, Mrs Milnes brought her dogs in named Winston and Reggie.
Winston is a greyhound and he is really big, maybe a little bit bigger than your normal greyhound and Reggie is a Labrador who is almost as big as Winston, (but Winston is still bigger.)

Also Winston was a rescued race dog and Mrs Milnes' husband got him after Mrs Milnes' birthday, for her.  

Pet d\Day

This Friday is pet day all the students can bring their pets if they want to. 
If you cant bring a pet, you can bring a collection or a teddy bear. You could also bring a floral collection and put it in something unusual. 
There will be different categories like dress up and an obstacle course. There will be certificates for pets. 
Here are some of the pets some people might be bringing: dogs, cats, bunnies, lambs, lizards, chickens, cows, horses, sheep, birds and guinea pigs.

This week is Maori Language Week and in the Indigo Room, we are celebrating Maori Language week by doing things in Maori.

So we are learning Maori Myths like Ra is the god of the sun, Tāwhirimātea is the god of the wind,

Tūmatauenga is the god of war and Tangaroa is the god of the sea.

Also we are learning how to speak Maori more

fluently. We have to write in Maori and we are going on a trip on Wednesday to see where Ngatimoti used to be.

CC14 Little House on the Prairie – Y5/6, W8 Term 3: Tasks & Questions

Week 8 Term 3: 10th – 14th September: Indians Ride Away – end of book or pages 302- 335

TASKS - Choose from the following...

1. ART – Draw the croaking frogs down by the creek OR draw Pa’s precious fiddle. Add detail and colour.

2. ART- Draw the little Indian baby or papoose in the carry bag that Laura saw OR draw the boat that Mr Edwards planned to make to sail south. Add detail and colour.

3. ART- Draw the crows cawing above the trees along the creek OR draw the Meadow Larks singing in the sky OR draw the wagon and horses going along the track on the creek bottoms. Add detail and colour.

4. RESEARCH- plowing or ploughing. What is it? Why is it necessary? Present your inquiry research for us all to read OR construct a labelled flow diagram of the process of getting a plant to the dinner table (Food process). You may want to construct a food production process for corn.

5. RESEARCH- Native Indians in North America. How is life for these first peoples today? Where do many live? Do they still live in tepees? What other Inquiry questions do you have? Present your findings and share with us all.

6. WRITE- The Ingalls family watched as all of the Indians rode away. The whole family seemed very sad to see the Indians leave. Write why you think that watching the Indians leave makes the Ingalls family so sad.

7. WRITE – your own book review for Little House on the Prairie.

8. DISCUSS/WRITE- The government was sending soldiers to remove settlers (kick them out) from the Indian Territory. Find Independence, Kansas and Washington D.C., on maps. Do you think that being so from the U.S. government made the situation better or worse? Why?

9. I.C.T/HANDS-ON – In groups, plan and make an I-Movie trailer for this book, Little House on the Prairie! Share your trailers with us all.

10. I.C.T- If you made a Kahoot during week 1 or 2, please share the link with us all so others can play. You may like to play some of the public Little House on the Prairie Kahoots that are available.

11. HANDS ON/I.C.T- Make a model of all the new vegetables growing in the garden or draw using a computer design or drawing application.

12. HANDS ON- Pretend your family is moving hundreds of miles away from your current home and your only transportation is a horse pulled wagon, design or build the inside of your wagon, what does it look like? What do you take? No technology- this is the 1800s!

13. I.C.T- If you can watch an episode of the original T.V Movie or perhaps the 2006 Disney version by the same name. Dress up in old style costume and have a shared lunch even. How is the book different / similar to the movie or T.V series? Perhaps have a go at singing ‘Oh Susanna’ or ‘In Dixieland’.

14. VOCABULARY - Find the meanings of the following words: cowered, scalplock, bristled, dangling, emptiness, cawed, crumpled, meekly, scuttled

Museum And Bishop School Trip!

Did you know that in the olden day if you go a spelling word wrong you got the cane, strap or dunces cap? At Bishop School we had to sing God Save The Queen.

At the museum there were some very cool photos. At the museum we learnt that James Spain always fired a cannon on Saturday to set the clocks in Nelson. There is a dog called the Kuri dog that can’t bark. Did you know that they have a dried orange on display at the museum. How weird!!  

In Nelson the Maungatapu Murderers would jump out and stop a cart and would steal money and stuff. They never meant to kill someone, but one day they did. To hide the evidence they threw their pistol (revolver) in the river.

A few days later a little boy Found the revolver. At Bishop School. Mila and Jack had to dress up in olden day style.

School-150 Years Young

On Friday 18th of August 2018, we celebrated the school’s 150th birthday.
We all dressed up in old timey clothes and our teachers addressed us as, E.g.
Miss Eloise, Miss Sanne, Master Nikau, and Master Sultaan.
After the role we decorated
some cakes in our house groups ( red, green,yellow and blue). Next the whole school went into
Indigo Room and had a class as if it were 150 years ago. We sung a song called God Save The Queen,
and we learnt maths by chanting out our 7 times tables. We were given feathers and pots of ink to
write with. We were also given some old-looking parchment to write on. We wrote out each letter
of the alphabet, and most of us made heaps of little blotches on our parchment. We had lunch inside,
in our classrooms.
Then we headed into Room One, and we were shown a mysterious parcel with
thin blue crepe paper that served as wrapping.
Next we played some old-timey games, such as
knucklebones, hopscotch, foursquare, Elastics, marbles,  skipping and stilts. We had so much fun!
We spent only a few hours on the games (sadly) but then we lined up in our house groups and shared
our cake out (smack!) Some of us got an extra! Yum! Now…out of the giant parcel came... Drum roll
please… came… 150 teddies! (not really, it was 100, but I thought 150 would suit more) we took
them home, and all in all, I think it was a great day!

CC14 Little House on the Prairie – Y5/6, W7 Term 3: Tasks & Questions

Week 7 Term 3: 3rd – 7th September: A Scream in the Night – Indians Ride Away or pages 253- 301

TASKS - Choose from the following...

1. ART – Draw the Indian war-cry. Add detail and colour.

2. ART – Draw one of the quilt patches that Mary and Laura made. Add colour and your own unique pattern!

3. ART – Draw and colour the panther in the tree-top OR draw the two new black rubber combs that Mary and Laura each received.

4. RESEARCH- Already the family had to deal with Indians, wolves, hunger, malaria, now what. A panther. A panther is also known as a puma or a cougar. Research Panthers and present your findings to us all.

5. WRITE/DISCUSS - In order to keep their families safe both Pa and the Indian wanted to kill the panther. Discuss how the lives of the settlers and the lives of the Indians were alike. Did all the people who lived on the prairie have the same concerns?

6. HANDS ON: Play ‘Patty Cake’, ‘Cat’s Cradle’, ‘Bean Porridge Hot’ or Hide the Thimble’ games. You may also like to play a game of Hopscotch – have a little competition in groups even.

7. WRITE/DISCUSS- A prairie fire swept across the land and put the Ingalls home in danger. Prairie fires are still a problem today in plains states today. Discuss how the book described how Ma & Pa fought the fire and how a fire would be fought today.

8. HANDS ON: Make and eat some porridge. Not sure if you want to flavour it with salt pork thou! Write about the experience and take some photos.

9. MAKE/HANDS ON – Make a plow and the field to use it on.

9. VOCABULARY - Find the meanings of the following words: shrieking, wailing, plaid, muffler, shawl, bootjack, cleat, coaxed, unhitch, venison, scorched, devilment, stockade, surly.

10. RESEARCH- buffalos. Present your answers to your Inquiry questions for us all to read.
