Week 7 Chapter Chat Activities

CC14 Little House on the Prairie – Y5/6, W7 Term 3: Tasks & Questions
Week 7 Term 3: 3rd – 7th September: A Scream in the Night – Indians Ride Away or pages 253- 301
TASKS - Choose from the following...
1. ART – Draw the Indian war-cry. Add detail and colour.
2. ART – Draw one of the quilt patches that Mary and Laura made. Add colour and your own unique pattern!
3. ART – Draw and colour the panther in the tree-top OR draw the two new black rubber combs that Mary and Laura each received.
4. RESEARCH- Already the family had to deal with Indians, wolves, hunger, malaria, now what. A panther. A panther is also known as a puma or a cougar. Research Panthers and present your findings to us all.
5. WRITE/DISCUSS - In order to keep their families safe both Pa and the Indian wanted to kill the panther. Discuss how the lives of the settlers and the lives of the Indians were alike. Did all the people who lived on the prairie have the same concerns?
6. HANDS ON: Play ‘Patty Cake’, ‘Cat’s Cradle’, ‘Bean Porridge Hot’ or Hide the Thimble’ games. You may also like to play a game of Hopscotch – have a little competition in groups even.
7. WRITE/DISCUSS- A prairie fire swept across the land and put the Ingalls home in danger. Prairie fires are still a problem today in plains states today. Discuss how the book described how Ma & Pa fought the fire and how a fire would be fought today.
8. HANDS ON: Make and eat some porridge. Not sure if you want to flavour it with salt pork thou! Write about the experience and take some photos.
9. MAKE/HANDS ON – Make a plow and the field to use it on.
9. VOCABULARY - Find the meanings of the following words: shrieking, wailing, plaid, muffler, shawl, bootjack, cleat, coaxed, unhitch, venison, scorched, devilment, stockade, surly.
10. RESEARCH- buffalos. Present your answers to your Inquiry questions for us all to read.

12. FLIPGRID – If you heard a scream in the night, what would you and your parents do? Think of your own very creative reason that might cause a scream in the night – think outside the box for this one! Add your thoughts to this FLIPGRID. https://flipgrid.com/b92408 PASSWORD - ChapterChatNZ
13. MINECRAFT – Create the night time environment with Pa discovering the panther OR create the prairie fire.

* During the day Laura and Mary kept themselves entertained. What did they do? What activities do you like to do in your spare time?

1. Can you please share any tasks that you have completed this week. Try and leave a reply on someone else's creation.
2. Pa often met Indians in the Big Woods. Why did he say that people had nothing to fear from Indians? Do you agree, explain.
3. When Pa came back from Independence what did he bring with him? Why were both Laura and Mary very happy with what he brought back?
4. Why did the Indians often come to their house? What did Ma do when they came?
5. What caused the prairie fire and what happened as a result?
6. Why did Mr Scott refer to the Indians as savages? Why was he wrong to think this?
7. Why had the Indians ‘gone west’ that morning? When would they return?
8. Why do you think some Indians wanted to kill the white people and some did not? Why was there this feeling?
9. Who was Soldat du Chene and what did Pa think of him?
10. What was making all the noise at night time? Why? Why was Pa pleased afterwards?
