Little House On The Prairie Tasks
CC14 Little House on the Prairie – Y5/6, W5 Term 3: Tasks & Questions
Week 5 Term 3: 20th – 24th August: Indian Camp – Pa goes to Town or pages 172 - 207
TASKS - Choose from the following...
1. ART - Draw the goldenrod plumes turning gray and the ox-eyed daisies’ yellow petals. Add colour and detail.
2. ART: Draw the yellow, almost brown prairie with red streaks of sumac across it. Could be a great Art painting or crayon activity! Add plenty of colour and detail.
3. MAKE: a model of the rocking chair that Pa made for Ma.
4. WRITE: Pretend you are Laura, and Pa has invited you and Mary to go with him to see the Indian’s camp. Using details from Chapter 14, “Indian Camp”, write about your day at the camp with Pa and Mary. Include details of what you saw, what you found, and how you felt about Mary’s idea of sharing with baby Carrie.
5. WRITE: The Ingalls family all got very sick and Dr. Tan said it was because of eating watermelons. Pa seemed not to believe Dr. Tan and he ate watermelon anyway. Today, because of science we know that just eating watermelon will not make you sick. Write why you think Dr. Tan thought the watermelon made them sick.
6. RESEARCH – Fever ‘N’ Ague is an old term for Malaria. Develop your personal Inquiry questions about Malaria. Then present your findings for us all.
7. RESEARCH: Thanksgiving. What is it? When does it occur? Answer your Inquiry questions and present a report.
8. HANDS-ON - The Ingalls family had become settled in their new home but were still doing without some of the things they were used to. Everyone was excited about the new cow and the prospects of having milk and possibly even butter. Investigate the process of making butter. Then work to make some butter. Write about the difference between the butter you made and store bought butter. Take a few photos of the process!
9. HANDS ON: Make your own bead necklace.
10. VOCABULARY - Find the meanings of the following words: dangle, pierced, hollow, fringes, swarms, smudge, drawling, mellow, dose, bitter, luscious.
11. FLIPGRID – Describe the worst sickness that you have had. How long were you sick for? How did you get better? Was there any magic recipe that helped you recover? What would have happened to you if you had your sickness over 150 years ago? Add your thoughts to this FLIPGRID. https://flipgrid.com/d88581. PASSWORD - ChapterChatNZ
12. MINECRAFT – Create the environment that Ma called Midsummer- the squirrels, the crows, the yellow grass, the blazing sky, etc OR build the abandoned Indian camp. Add plenty of detail.
13: WORDSEARCH: this task has been supplied by a fellow teacher, you may like to use it with your students: https://thewordsearch.com/…/32…/little-house-on-the-prairie/

Library Quiz and Regional Cross Country
Last week (Week 9) was the Year 5 & 6 Library Book Quiz at Parklands School. Riley, Ada, Louie and Nikau went to represent us with their library knowledge. Their hard work paid off as they came second out of 12 teams!
The four of them had to study lots in and out of school, often missing news presentation, math certificate and other things to practice in the library. Some of the things they had to do included reading set books and writing notes about them, ( the books were Dragon Defenders and A.N.Z.A.C Animals)and thinking up costumes to wear, (the costume that they wore was a taniwha).
Also last week was the Regional Cross-Country. On Friday 29, five runners, ( Riley, Ada, Tawn, Sayla and Ruby M) went to Rabbit Island to compete against hundreds of other runners. First was Ruby and Sayla's race; they were up against
around 80 other kids, so it was pretty cool that Ruby got eighth and Sayla got 24th!
For a while the y5 boys were racing and after that it was Riley, Ada and Tawn's race.
They had a good start but got tired early and in the end Ada came 11th, Tawn came 13th and Riley came 35th. But, as a team they won Best Small School! So altogether one runner in the Inter-Regionals and one trophy! Good result.
